KMW has been supporting the late Colonel Young-Oak Kim’s charitable work.

Colonel Kim was born in 1919 as the son of Soon-Kwon Kim who fled to the United States during Japanese colonial rule for Korea’s independence movement. Colonel Kim served as a member of US Army Operations during the World War II, and received Bronze medal of Military Valor (Italy) and Legion d’Honneur (France) for his contribution in battles in Italy and France. After the war, he transferred to the first reserve but rejoined the military to fight for his father’s country in the Korean War. He was not only a distinguished serviceman known for remarkable contribution as the first non-white battalion commander in the US Army, but he was also a philanthropist who established orphanages for children that had lost parents from the war. Even after the war, Colonel Kim continuously supported local community development and contributed to establishment of various Korean community facilities in Los Angeles, such as the Korean Health Information Center, Korean-American Federation, and Korean-American National Museum. He also actively supported movements to raise awareness on racial discrimination and founded a foster home for Asian women victims of domestic abuse.

The leadership and benevolence that the late Colonel Kim displayed in his life has been a true inspiration for KMW. In the journey to become a global company, KMW will continue to deeply honor the legacy and values he had left behind.
